Amelia – or Millie as many of us know her – stole the show on Friday 14th November, winning the national YMCA Young Achiever of the Year Award.
Once homeless and living on the streets of Exeter, Millie was recognised for her inspiring path of recovery, purpose and service she’s built over the past year.
“I couldn’t believe it when my name was announced,” says Millie. “It means so much to have won this award. I’m just so grateful to my family and all the staff at YMCA Exeter for the amazing support they’ve given me.”
Since arriving at YMCA Exeter in 2024, Millie has been volunteering with a drug and alcohol recovery agency, running art classes to support people as they navigate similar challenges she once faced herself.
Millie is also learning British Sign Language at the University of Exeter with plans to find a career in the future using sign language to support others who are unable to hear.
We are so proud of Millie for winning this national award. She doesn’t just talk about change, she models it, mentors it, and makes it real for others every day.
