A Place to Call Home: Sam’s Story of Stability, Work and New Beginnings

A Place to Call Home: Sam’s Story of Stability, Work and New Beginnings

At the end of January, stage 4 resident, Sam* together with support worker Ash and Joint CEO, Gareth, joined over 20 YMCA’s from across England and Wales at the Houses of Parliament for the launch of a brand-new campaign to deliver 10,000 genuinely affordable homes for young people across the UK.

Sam was one of six young people to bravely share his story with 30 MPs:

“I was made homeless and for four months I was sofa surfing with friends while trying to find work. It was during this time that I found out about YMCA Exeter.

“YMCA Exeter gave me a space of my own, but more importantly, it gave me the support I needed. I got involved in a range of workshops, including cooking and blacksmithing, and my support workers helped me find work in the local community. Once I had a job, I knew I was ready to take the next step.

“YMCA Exeter also provides affordable homes within the community, and I now live in a two-bed shared house. It feels homely and cosy. Growing up, I was constantly on the move and never felt settled, so having a proper home, being able to work, and pay rent means everything to me.

“For a long time, I didn’t feel ‘normal’, and now I finally do. Getting to where I am today feels like a real achievement, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds.”

Sam has been working full-time at a pub chain in Exeter and has just discovered that he’s been accepted onto their hospitality apprenticeship programme. We couldn’t be more delighted for Sam.
