Once sofa surfing, this is where Poppy is today:
Before I came to YMCA Exeter my housing situation was very stressful. I was sofa surfing, depressed and then I fell extremely sick and was hospitalised.
While I was ill I discovered the Movement is Medicine online tutorial and found the hour-long sessions really helped me to cope with my circumstances.

A few years later and whilst living at YMCA Exeter, the opportunity arose for me to take part in the training and become a certified instructor.
I now use the brand, Movement is Medicine and teach it within my own community.
I’ve been teaching classes for women, many of whom have struggled with addictions. More recently, I’ve been running sessions with a local charity called the Pelican Project, working with young adults with learning disabilities. It’s been one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done in my life, sharing the practice with people in society who don’t always get seen and recognised.
Having the gift of my own sacred space and being surrounded by the loving support of YMCA Exeter staff over the last three years has enabled me to unlock this opportunity.
Once sofa surfing and feeling very alone, Poppy has found safety and security in her own sacred space and staff support at YMCA Exeter, helping her to move into a new line of employment as a certified Movement is Medicine Instructor.
