Scroll through social media for long enough and you’ll soon come across posts dissecting the Church, comparing denominations, highlighting differences, and sometimes lamenting how divided Christians appear to be.
It can paint a picture of a fractured body, more focused on labels than on love. And yet, something very different is happening quietly and beautifully across this country and beyond.
We are seeing a renewed hunger for faith, particularly among young adults and teenagers. Many are turning to church, some for the first time. For this generation, denominations often matter far less than authenticity, community, and a living faith that makes a difference. They are not asking, “What tradition do you belong to?” but rather “Is Jesus real here? And does He change lives?”
At YMCA Exeter, we are privileged to see a powerful picture of Christian unity lived out every day.
Across our staff team alone, more than 24 different churches are represented. Different traditions. Different worship styles. Different histories. And yet we serve side by side with a shared purpose: to show God’s love in practical and tangible ways to children, young people, families, and those facing homelessness – providing the opportunity to explore faith for themselves. This is what “the Church in action” looks like.

Not confined to one building, one denomination, or one way of doing things, but expressed through compassion, service, prayer, and presence. When we support a child in crisis with their mental health, provide a safe home for a young person, offer mentoring, or simply listen to the concerns of the communities around us, we are the Church. Alive. Active. United.
The Bible reminds us that “there is one body and one Spirit… one Lord, one faith, one baptism” (Ephesians 4:4–5). Unity does not mean uniformity. It means choosing to centre ourselves on Jesus, to value one another and to work together for the sake of His kingdom.
As we look ahead, we believe God is calling his Church to even greater unity and collaboration.

At YMCA Exeter, we would love to deepen and widen our partnerships with local churches and Christian ministries. Whether through prayer, volunteering, mentoring, financial support, or joint initiatives, there are many ways we can stand together to serve those who need it most.
If you are part of a church or Christian organisation and are looking for a way to put faith into action, we would love to hear from you. Because when we partner rather than compete, when we celebrate rather than compare, and when we serve rather than separate, we can achieve far more than any one church or organisation ever could alone.
The Church is not divided and fading. It is alive. It is growing. It’s His, and together, by God’s grace, it is changing lives.
