Meet Millie, a British Sign Language student
Once street homeless, this is where Millie is today:
Arriving at YMCA Exeter, I heard about a free six-week taster session in Sign Language at Exeter Community College. The whole idea of a language being with your hands was really interesting to me, so I signed up.
I was surprised to see how quickly I adapted to it and realised I love using my brain and learning new things.
From that taster course, I decided to explore a career in Sign Language and signed up to evening classes at the University of Exeter.

I just love the career prospects of using sign language to help others who are unable to hear. I know I’d find so much joy in that.
Thanks to YMCA Exeter giving me the gift of a safe place to live, I’ve been able to rebuild my life. Truly, I’m so grateful.
Once facing drug addiction and homelessness, Millie has built an inspiring path of recovery, purpose and service over the past year at YMCA Exeter. She doesn’t just talk about change, she models it, mentors it, and makes it real for others every day.
