Inspired by Potential: Magnus, a volunteer and blacksmithing mentor

Meet Magnus, a volunteer and blacksmithing mentor

Once homeless, this is where Magnus is today:

My family used to be my support and when I became homeless, it was really isolating. Moving into YMCA Exeter housing was the support I needed. They gave me the gift of family and a community to connect with.

I’m now a student studying archaeology at the University of Exeter but I decided to continue supporting YMCA Exeter as a volunteer. They helped me when I was in a desperate situation and I’m so glad I can now give back to them.

Blacksmithing is an incredible way to work through emotions. Sometimes you have to hammer so hard and other times the metal needs a delicate hand. I like helping other young people manage their mental health through this creative process.”

Once homeless, Magnus now volunteers at YMCA Exeter in his spare time, using his skills to teach other young people how to learn blacksmithing and metalwork.
