Last year, 22-year-old April visited a retirement home for elderly people and was amazed by the emotions it raised in her. This year, April is making plans to become a Care Worker for the elderly.
“I went to Montpellier House for the first time in December with about 15 other residents from YMCA Exeter Stage 1 housing,” explains April. “We sang Christmas carols, played games and spent time chatting with the older residents.
“It took me by surprise but I completely fell in love with the place and the people. I’ve never felt like this before about anywhere. I was sitting chatting with a lady and hearing her stories. It just felt so good to spend time there and get to know some of the people that lived there.
“The visit has given me a sense of purpose for the first time in years. Now I know what I want to do in the future. I’ve begun to create a plan with my support worker to begin working towards the goal of becoming a care worker for the elderly.”
For many of our YMCA Exeter residents in Stage 1 housing, experience of trauma and mental health challenges can make thinking about the future a difficult process. For all of our residents, finding a sense of purpose and moving towards a goal is so important.
We are delighted to be able to share April’s story with you and we look forward to watching her take exciting steps towards this incredible new career.
If April’s journey has inspired you, why not take the next step yourself?
