17 March 2022

Thank you to everyone who came along to Sleep Easy on Friday 11th March and to everyone who supported us in so many ways. The amount of involvement, support, creativity and commitment was wonderful, and we thank all the participants and their supporters for raising a fantastic £7,000.  This is going directly to help with the final push to complete the Sidwell Studios project – 26 one-bedroom studio flats in the city centre for young people coming out of supported accommodation.

We had people taking part in Sleep Easy in Exwick, at Devon Business and Education Centre near Honiton and at home, sleeping anywhere but in their beds. And no-one crept into the warm despite the cold and rainy night – well done to you all!

From the spicy noodles and home-made cakes to the freshly cooked breakfast baps, we were well fed by volunteers and sustained throughout the night. We also enjoyed the firepit and a spontaneous musical session before making up shelters throughout the site.

As one participant said, “At 4 am I felt my wet pillow and I thought how would a homeless person get stuff dry?  It must be horrific. I have greater empathy for those who have to sleep rough.”

Another first-time participant commented, “Although I got some sleep, I woke up very tired, and experiencing that every morning would be tough.  I needed more layers!  The cold woke me up in the early hours of the morning.”

Our JustGiving page is still open and all support is greatly appreciated. https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/ymcaexetersleepeasy2022

The video below is the recording of two hour live broadcast by YMCA England and Wales. It includes some very interesting pre-recorded pieces from YMCA’s across the country as well as three live links. We are on at around 57 minutes in!  YMCA Exeter live interview from Sleep Easy 11/03/22 – YouTube

Thank you all once again and I hope everyone who took part is fully recovered!
