Whether you’re a keen runner or just starting out as a New Year’s resolution, you can make a difference for YMCA Exeter.

  • The Great West Run half marathon has it all; a city centre road race, combined with green lanes and beautiful views across Exeter, with a stunning stadium finish.
  • The 10k route will follow the first and final 3 miles of the half marathon.
  • The Community Mile takes place alongside the famous Great West Run Half Marathon and brand new 10k. The mile-long fun run is designed to encourage first time runners, families, friends, colleagues and teams to come together and challenge themselves.

Whether you choose the half marathon, the 10k or the community mile, your support will help transform communities where young people can belong, contribute and thrive.

Malik’s Story.

YMCA Exeter resident, 27-year-old Malik, had never run before January last year, let alone thought about entering a long-distance race. But with encouragement from YMCA support staff, Malik completed his first-ever 10k run in just over an hour!

The money raised from the Great West Run went to the development of our new move-on housing ‘Sidwell Studios’ for young people journeying to independence after experiencing homelessness or mental health challenges. Coming full circle, since completing the Great West Run, Malik now lives in Sidwell Studios, having played a huge part in raising funds for the development to be completed:

“I used to have my own flat in London, but problems with my mental health meant I ended up being evicted, it’s been a few years but it’s really good to move into Sidwell Studios. It’s so nice to have my own space. I’m on the top floor and can see the football stadium from my window.”

Your participation in the Great West Run can help young people like Malik find supported and safe housing, overcome adversity and thrive in their communities. Sign up now to join the team and we will make sure you receive your own YMCA running shirt and training plan, as well as fundraising tips and tricks!
